Safety

Destroy medical waste immediately.

If there’s any place you’d expect to be safe, it’s a hospital. They exist to keep people safe. However, when it comes to disposing of medical waste, many hospitals don’t have the capabilities to be safe.

When using a third-party processor to dispose of waste, safety to the hospital, its patients and visitors, and its employees are compromised. Using this method of disposal, all the biohazardous waste in a hospital piles up while waiting for pick-up day. These waste-holding rooms often become full to the point of overflow, making it dangerous for a staff member to even enter the room in an attempt to add more waste.

Furthermore, this holding room is often far from the site of waste creation. That means waste must be transported through hospital hallways full of staff members, patients, and visitors; past commons areas, cafeterias, and food courts; in elevators, lobbies, and waiting rooms. A faulty wheel on the cart, or an accidental collision in a crowded hallway is all it takes to spread dangerous waste.

Two main changes can be made to achieve significantly higher safety. First, dispose of dangerous waste as close to the site of waste creation as possible. Second, involve as few people as possible. If a doctor can administer a shot to a patient, then immediately sterilize and dispose of that syringe, all risk is eliminated.

Peerless Waste Solutions has developed a range of products that follow these two important rules, considerably increasing safety. Disposing of hazardous waste properly is the right thing to do—but the disposal itself should not be hazardous.
